Data Literacy: Multidimensional Data Structures

Articulate Rise Earth Systems Sciences

Overview

Thinking in multiple dimensions doesn't come naturally to most new scientists, and jumping straight into code without a conceptual foundation tends to create confusion later. This module was designed to close that gap. It introduces undergraduates to multidimensional data formats like NetCDF, covering why data is stored this way, how data and metadata are organized within a file, and how to locate critical information using Python. Its short format makes it easy to embed into courses, labs, homework assignments, or wherever a lightweight primer is needed.

Learning Objectives

Describe a multidimensional data structure in terms of its design, components, and use cases.

Locate critical metadata in a NetCDF file.
